                  一、 課題的目的意義:

                  The significance of the study: Skopos theory, put forward by German functionalists Reiss, Vermeer and Nord, is based on the prerequisite that translation as a cross-culture communicative activity is purposeful. The core of this theory is Skopos theory-- any translation is decided by the purpose of translation. In short, the purpose of translation decides the means of translation (Reiss & Vermeer, 1984, P.10). With China’s entry to WTO and the rapid development of Chinese economy, plenty of foreign commodities flood into Chinese markets, among which there are foreign cosmetics. As a special kind of advertisement that bridge consumers and companies, cosmetic brands play a crucial role. Correspondingly, the translation of cosmetic brands has become a significant and urgent task. However, due to the insufficient attention to cosmetic brands translation at home and abroad, studies in the cosmetic brands translation fall behind other pragmatic translation, such as tourist translation, advertisement translation and etc. To some extent, the quality of a brand translation will help to attract more consumers. This research adopts the Skopos theory discusses the translation of cosmetic brands and tries to find out some suitable translation strategies or approaches.

                  The purpose of the study

                  This paper mainly studies cosmetic brands translation from the perspective of Skopos theory. Based on Skopos theory, the paper analyzes Chinese translation of brands for cosmetics and illustrates that instructions for cosmetics should be translated with Skopos theory’s guidance. Besides, the validity of Skopos theory’s functions will be examined in the translation of cosmetics brands.

                  二、文獻綜述(分析國外研究現狀、提出問題,找到研究課題的切入點,附主要參考文獻,不少于1000字):

                  Translation Skopos theory, which developed by the German scholar Hans Vermeer, is a translation theory for the external research of translation. This Theory focused on the choice of a variety of purposes in the translating process, so that it will be able to make up for the shortage of the traditional translation studies, and add a new research perspective to the multidisciplinary exploration in translation. The Skopos theory points out translators do not focus on the equivalence of both source and target language texts, at the same time, both information and function of source texts are not to be considered. Therefore, we need to produce the expected function in translated texts for the understanding of readers under their language and cultural environment. From the perspective of functionalists, translation is a kind of communication activity which could be helpful communicating between cross-culture exchanging. They claim that many participants would be involved in the translating process, including the author of original text, translator, receptors, and readers etc. According to the main idea of original text,specific purpose and accurate strategies, the translator must try to get the translation standardized. Translator, as the first reader, his capabilities can decide the quality of translation. According to the main idea of original text, Skopos theory stresses on using translator’s subjective initiative to adopt different methods and techniques for translating. It makes the translation to convey the original content and to meet the stand of the target norms and culture. In addition, the translator can adjust, cut or even rewrite the original according to their need. Skopos theory provided the translator a feasible way to successfully use the translation strategy.

                  Skopos theory was proposed in General Translation Theory Framework by the German scholar Hans. Vermeer in the late 1970s. Later, Vermeer and his teachers Reiss wrote an essay Ordinary Translation Foundation, and explained Skopos theory systematically. Skopos theory bases on communicative behavior, text linguistics, text theory and the research achievement of reception theory. The term Skopos theory was from Greek, it means purpose and objective, Vermeer used this word to signify translation or the purpose of translation behavior. (Vermeer, 1978).

                  Functionalist translation theory has gone through four stages: the first stage is Katharina Reiss functional translation theory. She believes that the equivalence of the target text and the source text sometimes is impossible to achieve, and have different functions in the process of translation. Therefore, the translator should give priority to the translation function rather than the principle of equivalence. The second stage is the Hans. Vermeer’s Skopos theory. Based on behavior theory Vermeer created Skopos theory. The third stage is the Justa Holz -Manttari’s action of translation theory. Manttari based on Vermeer’s theory to develop hers with the transmission of information to a variety of cross-cultural conversion, translation as a complex activity to achieve a specific purpose. The fourth stage is the Christiane Nord text analysis mode. Christiane Nord sorted out the functionalist translation theory, and put forward that translator should follow the principle of “function plus loyalty”, which perfect the theory.

                  Skopos theory has been translated into multinational languages and spread to several countries in the world in more than 30 years since Skopos theory came into being. Since 1980s, Skopos theory disseminated in China, and played an important role on Chinese translation studies. According to incomplete statistics, from 1987 to 2006, more than 100 articles that referred to Skopos theory was published in all kinds of academic periodicals and papers of China, among them, approximately 37 core journals was published. The scope of the research covers the subject in translation definition, translation criteria, translation criticism, translation teaching, translation strategies, literary translation, and non-literary translation (including tourism translation, brand translation, advertisement translation, film title translation, translation of Chinese medical documents, news translation, and legal translation).

                  In 1987, Gui Qianyuan published the paper Remember the Federal Republic of Germany Three Translators in Chinese Translators Journal. It briefly described the Vermeer’s new insights about translation. In 1995, Zhang Nanfeng’s Out of the Dead end and into Translation Studies and Chen Xiaowei’s a brief comment on function theory, made brief introduction and comment on Skopos theory. After the two, the introduction related Skopos theory gradually increased. Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press also introduced Nord and Reiss’s theoretical writings Translating As a Purposeful Activity: Functional Approaches Explained and Translation Criticism: The Potentials & Limitations. It has played a leading role in academia for understanding the connotation and denotation of Skopos theory.

                  Skopos theory has been studied by many home and abroad scholars and widely applied in translation. It is also useful in explaining practical translation. Different translation purposes will produce different versions. That means we need to choose the best one to give the target consumers. However, due to the insufficient attention to cosmetic brands translation at home and abroad, studies in the cosmetic brands translation fall behind other pragmatic translations. This thesis adopts the Skopos theory to discuss the translation of cosmetic brands and tries to find out some suitable strategies or approaches. And it is hoped that the improved translations of cosmetic brands can be helpful to the consumer, the manufacturer, the agent and also the product itself.

                  Cosmetic brand is a very practical type of propaganda with high commercial value, and the ultimate purpose of all cosmetic brands is the same-- to promote sales. Skopos theory is a relatively new model in translation studies, and it can release translation from the shackle of the source text, providing a new perspective to translation, especially such pragmatic translation as cosmetic brands.

                  In this research, we are firstly required to study the definition of Skopos theory and know it well, then examine its application in cosmetic brands through case study. Compared with other traditional translation theories, German Functionalism, especially Skopos theory provides useful guidance in cosmetic brands translation. This thesis focuses on the application of skopos theory principles and methods in the translation of cosmetic brands and how to make a suitable choice among different strategies in translation process. And it is hoped that the improved translations of cosmetic brands can be helpful to the consumer, the manufacturer, the agent and also the product itself. The author will have better understanding on the Skopos theory, and improve translation ability. The paper has aimed at providing better translation for the cosmetic brands, so that it will help attract more consumers. However this paper is far from perfect in its research and still many aspects are left to be studied by the following scholars.

                  一、綜述本課題國內外研究動態,說明選題的依據和意義:

                  喬納森·斯威夫特(Jonathan Swift,1667-1745)是英國18世紀杰出的政治家和諷刺小說家。大批評家威爾遜把斯威夫特稱為六位最偉大的英國作家之一,排名僅在莎士比亞和彌爾頓之后。他的著名著作《格列佛游記》以其高超的思想與藝術成就而成為世界諷刺文學的典范。它完成于1726年,《格列佛游記》的構思源于與朋友的一次聚會,斯威夫特談到當時的政界種種貪婪無恥的行徑時激動萬分嬉笑怒罵間,信筆開始了第一卷的創作,成熟后經無數次的修改終于1726年匿名發表,并立刻在英國社會引起了很大的爭議。斯威夫特以幽默豐富了作品的道德內涵,以諷刺揭露荒誕,并通過人物性格和敘述框架使人難以置信的事件成為事實。它不是一本單純的少兒讀物,而是飽寓諷刺和批判的文學杰作。英國著名作家喬治·奧威爾一生中讀了至少6次。他說:“如果要我開一份書目,列出哪怕其他書都被毀壞時也要保留的六本書,我一定會把《格列佛游記》列入其中”。

                  斯威夫特的《格列佛游記》自問世以來,因以獨特方式針砭時政,體現時代精神和大眾需求而在文壇史上經久不衰,國外學者對它的研究也由來已久。

                  Howard Erskine-Hill [1]認為在《格列佛游記》的第三部分的結尾處,格列佛確認了自己的正式宗教信仰,并以其作為根據品評自己和他人。他認為作者筆下的格列佛不是一個世俗的人,而是一個地位卑微,做事又欠缺考慮的基督徒。無獨有偶,Michael McKean [2]在《〈格列佛游記〉的美德和真理》中認為斯威夫特作為虔誠的基督教徒,在小說中卻沒有提及“原罪說”,那是因為宗教觀念已徹底地滲透進他的社會觀中。通過分析《格列佛游記》中主人公遇到的種種事跡,不難看出作者的宗教觀念。兩個人的觀點不約而同地表明《格列佛游記》中的確存在基督教的因素。通過對小說內容的細致分析,解讀斯威夫特對宗教的深層理解。

                  在中國,《格列佛游記》的研究成果也是不容小覷的。伍厚愷[3]通過對小說中所運用的反語、夸張、對比、象征等藝術手段的解讀,深層次的挖掘出作者想向世人展現當時英國資本主義社會的政治、經濟、軍事、法律、外交、科學文化等方面種種腐敗和丑惡。與此同時,丁世忠[4]在論《格列佛游記》的怪誕美學風格中認為《格列佛游記》中夸張變形的人物、離奇怪誕的事件以及降格或貶低的描寫,表現出怪誕的美學風格。這種降格和貶低化把一切正常的生活秩序和事物的功能都加以顛倒, 讀者從中可以看到當時英國社會的腐敗、官場爭斗的荒唐以及人性的丑陋, 從而埋藏舊的生活, 追求美好的事物。此外,曹波[5]認為國內外論者多半忽略了《格列佛游記》中主要人物的經濟意識和異化過程。他對格列佛的自我和異化進行了基于文本的闡釋, 尤其對他政治意識的崛起和狂歡化敘事進行了細致的分析, 指出格列佛經歷了從經濟人到政治人的異化過程。孫紹先[6]在《論格列佛游記的科學主題》中比較了啟蒙思想家對科學的態度與啟蒙文學作品所反映的科學形象的差異, 指出了《格列佛游記》的科學諷刺與法國啟蒙文學對科學批判的相似。而李洪斌[7]通過對《格列佛游記》中大人國和慧骃國兩種教育模式下的道德教育的分析,解讀出作者斯威夫特對人類道德教育的某種憂慮和懷疑。

                  綜合上述國內外的研究,主要可以概括為以下幾點:(1)通過分析《格列佛游記》的內容,解剖作者的宗教思想及作者對宗教的理解;(2)以精湛的諷刺手法對英國18世紀現實生活的諷刺與批判;(3)通過對小說中的人物、內容的分析,研究《格列佛游記》的怪誕美學風格;(4)對小說主角格列佛的異化特征進行分析;(5)通過比較分析斯威夫特在小說中所描寫的科學與道德教育。

                  筆者通過對國內外學者的研究動態的整理,發現近年來學者對《格列佛游記》的研究,或從作品的諷刺手法、人物刻畫、意向方面進行,或揭示其象征意義、科學主題、怪誕風格。《格列佛游記》與大多數的游記小說一樣,情節設計也主要是依賴主人公的旅游和冒險故事[8] ,通過作品來反映當時的社會,通過對主人公的事跡描寫來傳達自己的觀點,所以筆者希望通過讀懂《格列佛游記》這部小說來讀懂作者。因此,本文結合當時時代特點,并且在前人烏托邦思想的基礎上進行取舍和發展,將小說的故事情節層層展開,從制度的視角深層次的解析《格列佛游記》中的社會觀。

                  二、研究的基本內容,擬解決的主要問題:

                  本文的基本內容包括兩個方面:(一)分析《格列佛游記》的寫作背景與小說的內在聯系,淺談什么時候制度;(二)分別從政治制度、法律制度、人性社會三方面來解析小說所展現的社會觀。擬解決的問題是通過作者在描述格列佛在小人國、大人國、飛島、慧骃國游歷時,所遭遇到的一系列匪夷所思的事情,從制度的視角呈現作者在《格列佛游記》中的社會觀。

                  三、研究步驟、方法及措施:

                  本文作者將首先收集18世紀前期英國的社會背景資料和國內外對于《格列佛游記》的研究資料,對其整理和分類,列出其中一些具有代表性的研究。然后搜集制度理論對當今社會的意義與影響,再仔細研讀和分析小說內容,從政治、法律、人性三方面來解析這部小說。

                  A View of Gulliver’s Travels’ Society Embodied in System Perspectives

                  . Literature Review

                  Jonathan Swift is an outstanding politician and satirical writer in Britain in the 18th century. Wilson who is a great critic thinks that Swift is known as one of the six greatest British writers, which is only after Shakespeare and Milton. With its outstanding thought and artistic value, Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels is praised as the model for world satirical literature. Gulliver’s Travels was finished in 1726. The conception of the book came from a party with his friends. Swift started the first volume when he talked excitedly about the greed and shame that existed the politics. And the book finally published anonymously after amending so many times. At that time, it created a storm of controversy immediately. Swift enriches the moral connotation of the work with his humor, and also exposes the absurd with satire. He makes the incredible events be the truths through character and narrative framework. Gulliver’s Travels is not only a simple puffin book, but the literary masterpiece with full of satire and criticism. The famous British writer George Orwell has read the book au lease six times in his life. He said,” If I am asked to list six books which should be kept even if other books are destroyed, Gulliver’s Travels would definitely be included.”

                  Since it was published, the status of Swift’s Gulliver’s travels had not been changed in the literary history because it commented on current affairs in a unique way, which reflected spirit of the time and the needs of masses. And the foreign scholars have researched it for a long time.

                  Howard Erskine ? Hill [1] thinks Gulliver confirms the official religion at the end of the third part of Gulliver’s travels and judges others and himself according to his religion. He thinks that Gulliver is not a secular person, but a humble Christian who lacks of consideration. Similarly, Michael McKean [2] thinks that Swift does not mention the “original sin” in the novel as a devout Christian in Virtue and Truth in Gulliver’s Travels, because the religious ideas have been thoroughly infiltrated his social views. It is not difficult to know the author’s religious ideas by analyzing all the deeds of Gulliver. The two persons’ views all show that Gulliver’s travels does exist the Christian element. They interpret Swift’s deep understanding of the religion through a detailed analysis of the novel content.

                  In China, the research of Gulliver’s travels should not be underestimated. Through?analysing?the?artistic?technique?including?Irony,?exaggeration,?contrast?and?symbol?used?in?the?novel, Wu Houkai [3] deeply exposes the variety of corruption and ugly of the British capitalist society’s political, economic, military, legal, diplomatic, scientific and cultural, which Swift wants to show to the world. At the same time, Ding Shizhong thinks that exaggerated characters, unusual events and derogatory descriptions contribute to the uncanny aesthetic style in Gulliver’s travels in Uncanny Aesthetic Style in Gulliver’s Travels. The derogatory descriptions reverse all the normal order of life and the things functions. The readers can see the British corrupt society, bureaucratic battle absurd and the ugliness of human nature from Gulliver’s Travels, which makes them bury the old life and pursuit the good things. Besides, CaoBo[5] thinks that most scholars at home and abroad ignore the hero’s alienation and economic consciousness in Gulliver’s Travels. He presents a text-based analysis of Gulliver’s self and alienation, and especially a unique interpretation o f the rise of his political consciousness and his carnivalized narrative. It argues that Gulliver is alienated from an economic being into a political one. After making a comparison of the great Enlightenment thinkers’ positive attitudes towards science and what Swift described in his literary works, Zhang Shaoxian [6] points out that the ironic tone on science in Gulliver’s Travels is similar to that of criticism on science in the French Enlightenment literature in The Theme of Science in Gulliver’s Travels. Li Hongbin [7] thinks that Swift has his certain worry and doubts in human moral education through analyzing the two specific moral education modes in Lilliput and Houyhnhnm.

                  Based on the domestic and foreign research, it can be summarized as follows: (1) the author’s religious thoughts and his understanding of religion are analyzed through the analysis of Gulliver’s Travels. (2) British real life in eighteen century is criticized by exquisite of Gulliver’s Travels. (3) Gulliver’s alienation is analyzed in detail. (4) The science and the moral education in Gulliver’s Travels are analyzed by comparison.

                  I discover that in recent years most scholars study Gulliver’s Travels on analyzing the satire of the works, characterization, intention or revealing its symbolic significance, scientific themes and uncanny style. But the ideal concept in Gulliver’s Travels mentions rarely. Like most travel novels, the plots of Gulliver’s Travels also mainly depend on the character’s travel and adventure stories [8]. And Gulliver’s Travels also reflects the social by the works. The author wants to convey his ideas through the hero’s deeds. So I hope that I can read Swift by reading Gulliver’s Travels. Therefore, based on the choice and development to utopian thought, this thesis will unfold the plots of the novel and analyze deeply Swift’s social ideal with combing with the characteristics of that era.

                  II. Statement of the Problems

                  The main contents of this thesis fall into two parts: (1) Analyze the internal connection of Gulliver’s Travels’ writing background and the novel. And talk about the meaning of the System; (2) Analyze the social outlook in this book from political system, legal system and human society. The problem that this thesis needs solve is to show the social outlook in Gulliver’s Travels from the system perspective through a series of stories which happen in Gulliver.

                  III. Methodology

                  The author of this thesis will firstly sort out and classify the collected material about the social background of English in early 18th century and research data at home and abroad for Gulliver’s Travels and list some typical researches among them. Then collect meaning and implications of the theory of system. And then study and analyze the novel carefully from the political, legal and human nature.
