jerald wayne strickland
interim senior vice president of academic affairs, university of houston
curator ream, chancellor george, provost cope, dean davis, distinguished faculty, graduates, friends and family members, i am so pleased to be with you on this special occasion.
thank you dean davis for the wonderful introduction, and i bring warm wishes from my university to the 2005 graduates, their families and guests, and to the faculty and administration of the college of optometry. i am especially pleased to join university of missouri system curator, dr. anne ream, dean larry davis and the faculty to celebrate this most important event in the life of an optometrist, the sudden and abrupt change from professional student to doctor.
graduates, it is a very high order privilege and distinct honor for me to address you today, and i am humbled by your collective accomplishments as students, as clinicians and as citizens.
the 28 women and 16 men who are members of the class of 2005 come from thirteen (13) states. you joined this fine university and college four years ago as eager students with strong academic backgrounds and collegial spirits. i checked with the dean and a few members of your class earlier today and i am happy to report that your spirits have not been broken, nor your intellectual curiosity diminished.
one could rate the approximately 1,200 members of the optometry class of 2005 across this nation as the best we have graduated, indeed with the many changes in our practicing profession and consequently in the preparatory curriculum one can feel quite safe in making such a statement at this and, hopefully, subsequent commencements.
in addition to these accolades, one should realize that only 1/100th of 1 percent of the world’s population achieves the doctoral level of education. therefore, from a global perspective, this is truly a remarkable achievement.
i read recently that brevity, humor and celebrity are important in graduation speeches. if i can do one out of three, i feel i have accomplished my goal.
i want to tell you a story and share a simple message with you.
mrs. brown was a longtime patient of mine at the university eye institute. we had worked through systemic and eye diseases and related conditions over about 8 years. she was a regular, annual patient who felt comfortable about calling me when she had questions and sharing with me issues related to her healthcare needs. we had dealt with open angle glaucoma, cataract surgery, diabetes, hypertension and frequent changes in her refractive error.
about 4 years ago i received one of those regular phone calls but this time there was sadness in her voice. remember, i was the one person of only a few with whom she shared her health and vision problems and sometimes personal problems. i was “her eye doctor” and we had long ago passed the cross cultural communication barrier.
as we talked, mrs. brown began to cry as she shared the fact that her health insurance and subsequent medicare changes would no longer pay for her visits nor the diagnostic and therapeutic services that i prescribed. although commonplace today, these sudden and often traumatic changes in medical service providers disregard the importance of trust, understanding and respect developed over time between patient and doctor. this scenario happens only too often where this important relationship between doctor and patient is strained and often severed due to impersonal and external factors.
the story of mrs. brown has been repeated tens of thousands of times in optometry, medicine, dentistry, osteopathy, podiatry, pharmacy, etc. for many, the doctor-patient relationship has been replaced with impersonal third party shepherding of patients from provider to provider. many of you have experienced this disruption in your healthcare.
mrs. brown did still stay in touch with me, about once every year, with a phone call to me or my staff bringing us up-to-date on her health and vision problems. she had many doctors over those years. the reason i tell you this story is to demonstrate and emphasize to you that trust, understanding and respect are powerful magnets for doctors and their patients. a breach of these will likely repel. good doctor-patient relationships are built on honesty and integrity and withstand external pressures, influences and even misunderstandings. a trusting doctor-patient relationship is not easily disturbed, and we see in the example of my patient, mrs. brown, it can prevail.
i was sure when mrs. brown did have a choice to return to me as her eye doctor, she would bring her family and friends.
well, it happened! about 2 years ago, during our annual phone call, she seemed excited and most cheerful—“doctor, i have made an appointment to see you next month, the insurance tides have turned.”
this brings to mind a truism from the american frontier: “honesty and integrity are not something you should flirt with—you should be married to them.”
honesty, trust, compassion, fairness, patience, understanding, respect, dignity, confidentiality, good citizenship, charity and beneficence are most worthy traits for all citizens, but they are mandatory traits for those of us who occupy positions of high responsibility for human and health services. this is not a case where 80% or even 90% of those attributes is acceptable—it’s 100%—much like take-offs and landings and action potentials, it’s all or none.
most persons have a tincture of each of these traits, but for the healthcare provider it is an imperative to have a large therapeutic and preventive dose.
if one samples patients regarding the traits of the “best doctors” they know or have experienced, each of the previously noted virtues can be found. patients want and expect their doctors to be professionally virtuous and to be model citizens.
you will soon take the “optometric oath” which allows you to state before family, friends, colleagues and your faculty, your ethical and professional convictions.
in the 4th century b.c., the greek physician hippocrates, the “father of medicine,” laid out common sense ethical principles which are known to all of us in the health professions. they deal with respect, fairness, justice, confidentiality, honesty and quality of care. “the hippocratic oath.”
sound familiar? yes, and after 17 centuries.
there is one somewhat lesser known component of the hippocratic oath; it is “respect for your teachers.” simply stated, hippocrates wrote and pledged: “to hold him (or now her) who has taught me this art as equal to my parents and to live my life in partnership with him (her).”
for your distinguished and patient faculty members who have played roles as teacher, mentor and counselor in your career, continue this relationship and trust and respect them and the institution which has embraced you for four years.
another truism from the american frontier: “when you get to where you are goin’, the first thing to do is take care of the horse you rode in on.”
there are few things in higher education that reach the level of pride and satisfaction for a faculty member than to share one’s knowledge, skill and experience with others who will go forth and practice (and teach others).
back to mrs. brown. she taught me important lessons in doctor-patient relations—ones that work, ones, which i hope you will embrace, and practice--- honesty, integrity, understanding, respect and trust.
congratulations and best wishes and stay the course and lead the profession of optometry to new heights, and remember mrs. brown, every patient can be a mrs. brown.
finally, you are now entering the ranks of the optometric profession with our high expectation that you will continue the leadership traditions of irvin borish, anne ream, jack bennett, larry davis, your distinguished faculty, and your state and national optometric leaders.
i challenge each of you to distinguish yourself in all aspects of the profession. i promise you the result will indeed be fulfilling and rewarding. “bite off more than you can chew and chew it!”
i leave you with some advice from the sage and plainspoken will rogers:
“good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment”
and
“never miss a good chance to shut up”
it has been an honor to be with you today.
honesty is the best policy
a milkman became very wealthy through dishonest means. he had to cross a river daily to reach the city where his customers lived. he mixed the water of the river generously with the milk that he sold for a good profit. one day he went around collecting the dues in order to celebrate the wedding of his son. with the large amount thus collected he purchased plenty of rich clothes and glittering gold ornaments. but while crossing the river the boat capsized and all his costly purchases were swallowed by the river. the milk vendor was speechless with grief. at that time he heard a voice that came from the river, do not weep. what you have lost is only the illicit gains you earned through cheating your customers.
moral: honest dealings are always supreme. money earned by wrong methods will never remain forever.

y 一個誠實的故事 on february twelfth, a friday night in new york in winter, a poor handsome young man called jay stood near the railway station, playing a small concert on his violin. the music was so excellentthat many people slowed down, sometimes gave a cheer or praise, and put some money into his hat.

then george explained the whole story. he bought a lottery ticket a few days ago. yesterday he found that he won a prize of $500,000. he was very excited to be a winner. on his way home, he felt the music was so wonderful that he took out $100 and put it into the hat. however, the lottery ticket with his name on it was also mistakenly thrown in.

later, after hearing the tale, someone asked jay, what a huge discovery! why didn t you take the lottery ticket for yourself? he said, although i don t have much money, i live happily in general; but if i lose honesty, i won t be happy forever. i cannot afford to do that.

1My aunt died back in about 2003. She was eighty-four and so was my uncle. When she passed he was devastated. They had been married for over 60 years. We expected him to pass on quickly after she died. He attended his church more frequently and his mourning was nearly unbearable to witness. His only daughter lived clear across the country so he had only the rest of the extended family and church family to comfort him. My cousin talked him into selling the house that he and my aunt had built together about twenty-five years before. It was very hard to part with the home they built together. He was going to move into an apartment, but at the last moment, my cousin and he saw a new house for sale, that was close to his business. She helped him buy furniture and a flat screen television. He had not watched television for years because of his religion. He was like a kid with a new toy but still grieved horribly for my aunt. One day he called my cousin who was living in Texas and told her that he reconnected with a lady from a church that he and my aunt went to forty years previously. She played piano and his church was looking for new music. Her husband had died about seven years previously. He said he just wanted someone to go out to dinner with and spend time with. We were happy for them but had no idea how it would turn out. They were both almost eighty-seven years old. They were like lovebirds and spent as much time together as they could. They both had one child each, she a son, he a daughter. She had a house that her father built for her when she got married to her first husband. She was content there. The other fly in the ointment was that they were both very busy people. They both still worked! They were in their mid-eighties and both had their own family businesses. She worked for her son who took over the family business and he had his own business. The clash in their relationship came when they neither wanted to leave their respective churches. She went to her Baptist church that she had attended for many years and he went to his, which was a Pentecostal. They decided to remain friends but nothing more. He was broken-hearted, but felt that his religion was the only way. She didn’t want to leave her church and didn’t like the extreme of his. Before too long they realized that they did not want to be apart. They would find a new church together. They planned to marry. When he took her to a jewelry store and bought her a diamond, the employees were so impressed that they had a big write up in our own local paper, ""The Truth" for Valentines" Day." They prepared for their wedding. They moved the wedding date up because neither wanted to wait any longer to "be together," and it was not proper to "be together" without being married. They got married in her house, where they decided they would live. It was such a beautiful refreshing thing to see, two people who you would have thought had pretty much lived their lives, were beginning a new one together. I have never seen my uncle happier. He is still in love and she loves him as much as he loves her.

Legend of Chang-Er, the Moon Goddess
The story begins around 2170 after the great flood in the Hsia dynasty. Yu, king of many kingdoms, was credited with stopping the flood, and with teaching farmers how to cultivate their fields, thus commencing a prosperous epoch.
At the same time in Heaven the Jade Emperor wished to help the farmers raise animals and cultivate their fields. He gave orders to his ten sons to become ten suns and travel across the sky one at a time, each taking one day. The ten young men disobeyed; all ten of them came out every day, and the heat from ten suns shining all at once made the earth intolerably hot. People and animals died of heat, rivers dried up, land became barren and forests scorched and burned.
The farmers prayed, giving sacrifices and burning incense to Heaven for deliverance. The Jade Emperor heard their prayers and saw the destruction caused by his sons. He sent Hou Yi, his bravest god, down to earth to solve the problem of the ten suns and end the catastrophe. Hou Yi was a good, courageous god with a beautiful wife, Chang Er. Deeply in love with each other, they were known as the Divine Couple. Chang Er didn’t like the thought of going down to earth, but she was unwilling to be separated from her husband, so together they descended to earth and became mortals among the Eastern clans.
Hou Yi was a great archer and brought his magic bow from heaven with him. Knowing that Hou Yi came from heaven, the people of the clans proclaimed him to be their leader.
Seeing how much suffering and destruction were caused by the heat of the ten suns, Hou Yi climbed to the top of Tienshan mountain and began negotiating with the suns to have pity on the unfortunate people. He pleaded to the suns to take turns and make their journeys across the sky singly, one for each day, and explained the white blaze of ten suns is much too much for the land to bear. He also told them how much Heaven loves all living things.
But the ten audacious suns considered it dull and boring to go across the sky one at a time and that much more fun was to be had by coming out together, so they refused to listen. They increased their heat and caused even more suffering. This angered Hou Yi. He took out his magic bow and arrows and shot down nine of the suns; the last sun begged for his life and promised obedience at performing his task of separating night from day.
Finally the earth was at peace and people enjoyed their work and lives. However, when Hou Yi made his report to the Jade Emperor, he was furious at Hou Yi for killing his nine sons, and refused to let the Divine Couple return to Heaven.
As leader of the clans, there was much for Hou Yi to do on earth. He taught the people many ways to defend their land and themselves. He was so busy with his duties he became neglectful of his lovely and lonely wife. Chang Er was especially unhappy to be an earthly mortal with all of mortality’s suffering, aging and death in particular. Also, she was angry at Hou Yi for shooting down the Jade Emperor’s nine sons, and the couple became unhappy and estranged.
To avoid arguing with his wife, Hou Yi spent his time travelling about the land alone. He became familiar to its people, performing many good deeds wherever he travelled. He also killed a gigantic, 100,000-foot snake and a nine-headed monster that had caused much distress and thousands of lives. Many times he prayed to the Jade Emperor to let himself and his wife return to Heaven, but the Emperor refused his plead and so Hou Yi and Chang Er remained as mortals, suffering as ordinary human beings do.
In his travel he chanced to meet a beautiful mortal woman, Mi Fei. She was the wife of Feng Yee, the God of Water, who had a reputation as a womanizer and for ignoring his wife. Both lonelyd, Mi Fei and Hou Yi became friends and later lovers. In legend, such things never remain unpunished. When Feng Yee returned and discovered his wife’s infidelity, he was furious and transformed himself into a white dragon, roaring and plunging in the water, destroying fields and killing many people. Hou Yi thought the dragon was an evil sea monster. He took up his bow and shot, blinding Feng Yee in one eye. Thereupon, the god of waters registered a complaint with the Jade Emperor. The Emperor considered all the good deeds that Hou Yi had done for the mortals, and since he was already under punishment, the Emperor merely ordered Hou Yi to go home to Chang Er and never see Mi Fei again.
Hou Yi had no choice but to return home. Chang Er was angry with him for his unfaithfulness and unhappiness came between the once “divine” couple. Hou Yi knew that he had wronged his wife and tried to soothe her, telling her that tears would make her age faster, as they were now mortals. Chang Er looked at her reflection in the water, for in those days there were no mirrors. She was terrified to see wrinkles appearing around her eyes, and demanded that Hou Yi find some way to restore her immortality.
Hou Yi was desolate and dared not stay at home, but he couldn’t violate the Jade Emperorís order by going to Mi Fei. He became violent and drunk. In his drunkenness he treated the people cruelly. There were two men among the people who began to plot against him, Feng Meng and Han Cho. Both were opportunists. Han Cho told Hou Yi that the Royal Goddess resided on top of Kunlun Mountain and had a pill of immortality.
Hou Yi decided that for the saje of peace at home he would climb Kunlun Mountain and begg the Royal Goddess for the pill of immortality. The Goddess, taking pity on him, gave him her one remaining pill. She instructed Hou Yi that if one person took the pill he would ascend to Heaven, but if he cut the pill into two halves and shared it with another, they could live forever. The pill had to be taken on the 15th night of the eighth month when the moon was fullest. Hou Yi was very happy and thanked the Royal Goddess exuberantly and went home to Chang Er. They decided to divide the pill and take it at the proper time so that they could both attain immortality.
Three days before the 15th day of the eighth month, Hou Yi heard of a medicinal solution called “jade elixir” that could be found on Tienshan mountain, an elixir that could could prevent women from aging and allow them to stay eternally beautiful. Hou Yi wished to please Chang Er and resume a happy life at home, so he decided that he could make the trip in three days to obtain this wonderful medicine and to surprise his wife. He left for Tienshan immediately.
On the 15th of the eighth month, Chang Er saw no sign of Hou Yi. She waited and later grew impatient, and sought out Feng Meng the schemer and asked where her husband was. Feng Meng lied and told Chang Er that Hou Yi had gone to see Mi Fei. Chang Er believed him and became furious at her unfaithful husband. As the moon rose Chang Er went into the garden, looking up to heaven and remembering the contentment in the life of immortality and the happiness of heaven, and then she thought of the sorrows of the earth. She was confused and filled with emotion. Thinking that Hou Yi had abandoned her, she swallowed the whole pill and at once she felt her body becoming lighter, rising upwards towards the sky. At this moment Hou Yi arrived back with the jade elixir and saw Chang Er ascending faster and faster.
The gods and goddesses in heaven despised Chang Er because she had abandoned her husband. Chang Er had to change her direction and head toward the cold palace in the moon. Hou Yi watched from the earth and took out his magic bow to shoot down the moon. He aimed but he could not bear to kill his wife. Frustrated and saddened, he destroyed his magical weapons and took to drink.
Hou Yi’s enemy Feng Meng watch and waited until Hou Yi was senselessly drunk, then he attacked Hou Yi then and killed him. When Chang Er arrived at the cold palace in the moon and saw how her husband had been cruelly murdered she deeply mourned what she had done. She was cut off from the happy life in heaven and committed to eternity alone in the moon, becaming the moon goddess.
Each year on the 15th day of the eighth month, when the moon is at its fullest and brightest, people look at the moon and try to see in it the image of a beautiful maiden.

The Crow and the Pitcher
A Crow, half-dead with thirst, came upon a Pitcher which had once been full of water; but when the Crow put its beak into the mouth of the Pitcher he found that only very little water was left in it, and that he could not reach far enough down to get at it. He tried, and he tried, but at last had to give up in despair. Then a thought came to him, and he took a pebble and dropped it into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped it into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped that into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped that into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped that into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped that into the Pitcher. At last, at last, he saw the water mount up near him, and after casting in a few more pebbles he was able to quench his thirst and save his life.

It was a scorching hot summer day. One crow was very thirsty. “I’m so thirsty.” The thirsty crow roamed around looking for water. After flying for a long time, the crow found a water bottle in one of the farmer’s yard. The crow was so happy that he was able to have a drink.
The crow put his beak into the bottle. However, because the bottle was so long, he was not able to reach the water. The crow was exhausted.
’Should I go some other place for a drink?’ He thought. However, because his wings were damage, he was not able to move. “What shall I do?”
The crow flew round and round the farmer’s yard, and thought. “Sure, that’s what I will do.” The crow had an idea.
With all his strength, the crow started picking up stones. “One, two.” He did this several times until the bottle was filled with stones. Then the crow drank a lot of water. Finally, the crow had enough strength to fly again.
It was a hot summer day with the sun shining brightly. A crow was flying here and there in search of water for his very thirsty throat.
”Oh, I am can I find water?” At last the crow was so happy because he found a water bottle. “It’s a water bottle! I’m saved!”
But there was a problem! The opening of the bottle was too small for the crow’s beak to fit was no way he could drink from the bottle.
”Oh! There is only a little bit of water at the bottom. Still it’s the only water I’ve found. What can I do?”“哦!
The crow thought and though. Finally he came up with a good idea. “That’s it! That’s what I’ll do!”
The crow found a stone and put it inside the bottle. “Now, let’s have a drink! Oh, no! This won’t work.” The crow put two more stones into the bottle. “Let’s have some water! Oh,I still need more!”
The crow found more stones and put them into the bottle. “It should be enough. Let’s see if I can drink it now! Ah! How refreshing.”
The wise crow kept putting stones in the bottle to make the water come up. So finally he was able to enjoy the refreshing water to his hearts content. It’s certainly good to have wisdom!

she was dancing. my crippled grandmother was dancing. i stood in the living room doorway absolutely stunned. i glanced at the kitchen table and sure enough-right under a small, framed drawing on the wall-was a freshly baked peach pie.
i heard her sing when i opened the door but did not want to interrupt the beautiful song by yelling i had arrived, so i just tiptoed to the living room. i looked at how her still-lean body bent beautifully, her arms greeting the sunlight that was pouring through the window. and her legs those legs that had stiffly walked, aided with a cane, insensible shoes as long as i could remember. now she was wearing beautiful dancing shoes and her legs obeyed her perfectly. no limping. no stiffness. just beautiful, fluid motion. she was the pet of the dancing world. and then she d had her accident and it was all over. i had read that in an old newspaper clipping.
she turned around in a slow pirouette and saw me standing in the doorway. her song ended, and her beautiful movements with it, so abruptly that it felt like being shaken awake from a beautiful dream. the sudden silence rang in my ears. grandma looked so much like a kid caught with her hand in a cookie jar that i couldn t help myself, and a slightly nervous laughter escaped. grandma sighed and turned towards the kitchen. i followed her, not believing my eyes. she was walking with no difficulties in her beautiful shoes. we sat down by the table and cut ourselves big pieces of her delicious peach pie.
so i blurted, how did your leg heal?
to tell you the truth my legs have been well all my life, she said.
but i don t understand! i said, your dancing career i mean you pretended all these years?
very much so, grandmother closed her eyes and savored the peach pie, and for a very good reason.
what reason?
your grandfather.
you mean he told you not to dance?
no, this was my choice. i am sure i would have lost him if i had continued dancing. i weighed fame and love against each other and love won.
she thought for a while and then continued. we were talking about engagement when your grandfather had to go to war. it was the most horrible day of my life when he left. i was so afraid of losing him, the only way i could stay sane was to dance. i put all my energy and time into practicing and i became very good. critics praised me, the public loved me, but all i could feel was the ache in my heart, not knowing whether the love of my life would ever return. then i went home and read and re-read his letters until i fell asleep. he always ended his letters with you are my joy. i love you with my life and after that he wrote his name. and then one day a letter came. there were only three sentences: i have lost my leg. i am no longer a whole man and now give you back your freedom. it is best you forget about me.
i made my decision there and then. i took my leave, and traveled away from the city. when i returned i had bought myself a cane and wrapped my leg tightly with bandages. i told everyone i had been in a car crash and that my leg would never completely heal again. my dancing days were over. no one suspected the story i had learned to limp convincingly before i returned home. and i made sure the first person to hear of my accident was a reporter i knew well. then i traveled to the hospital. they had pushed your grandfather outside in his wheelchair. there was a cane on the ground by his wheelchair. i took a deep breath, leaned on my cane and limped to him.
by now i had forgotten about the pie and listened to grandma, mesmerized. what happened then? i hurried her when she took her time eating some pie.
i told him he was not the only one who had lost a leg, even if mine was still attached to me. i showed him newspaper clippings of my accident. so if you think i m going to let you feel sorry for yourself for the rest of your life, think again. there is a whole life waiting for us out there! i don t intend to be sorry for myself. but i have enough on my plate as it is, so you d better snap out of it too. and i am not going to carry you-you are going to walk yourself. grandma giggled, a surprisingly girlish sound coming from an old lady with white hair.
i limped a few steps toward him and showed him what i d taken out of my pocket. now show me you are still a man, i said, i won t ask again. he bent to take his cane from the ground and struggled out of that wheelchair. i could see he had not done it before, because he almost fell on his face, having only one leg. but i was not going to help. and so he managed it on his own and walked to me and never sat in a wheelchair again in his life.
what did you show him? i had to know. grandma looked at me and grinned. two engagement rings, of course. i had bought them the day after he left for the war and i was not going to waste them on any other man.
i looked at the drawing on the kitchen wall, sketched by my grandfather s hand so many years before. the picture became distorted as tears filled my eyes. you are my joy. i love you with my life. i murmured quietly. the young woman in the drawing sat on her park bench and with twinkling eyes smiled broadly at me, an engagement ring carefully drawn on her finger.
we tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them worse. for my grandchildren, i d know better.
i d really like for them to know about hand-me-down clothes and home-made ice cream and leftover meatloaf. i really would.
my cherished grandson, i hope you learn humility by surviving failure and that you learn to be honest even when no one is looking.
i hope you learn to make your bed and mow the lawn and wash the car-and i hope nobody gives you a brand-new car when you are sixteen.
it will be good if at least one time you can see a baby calf born, and you have a good friend to be with you if you ever have to put your old dog to sleep.
i hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in.
i hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother. and it is all right to draw a line down the middle of the room, but when he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he s scared, i hope you ll let him.
and when you want to see a disney movie and your kid brother wants to tag along, i hope you take him.
i hope you have to walk uphill with your friends and that you live in a town where you can do it safely.
earn to use computers, you also learn how to add and subtract in your head.
i hope you get razzed by friends when you have your first crush on a girl, and that when you talk back to your mother you learn what ivory soap tastes like.
may you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on the stove and stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole.
i hope you get sick when someone blows smoke in your face. i don t care if you try beer once, but i hope you won t like it. and if a friend offers you a joint or any drugs, i hope you are smart enough to realize that person is not your friend.
i sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your grandpa or go fishing with your uncle.
i hope your mother punishes you when you throw a baseball through a neighbor s window, and that she hugs you and kisses you when you give her a plaster of pared mold of your hand.
these things i wish for you-tough times and disappointment, hard work and happiness.
he and she were sitting face to face. at this moment, the landlord came in and asked, are yousure you do not rent the house any more? he kept silent and she only shook her head. theywere going to p> 房東開始驗收房子,在房間里轉了一圈后,突然尖叫起來: 你們把我家弄成什么樣子了,墻上到處是鐵釘,還讓我怎么繼續出租啊!
then the landlord began examining the house. after looking around, the landlord screamed, damn god! see how you have ruined my house? the walls are full of nails! how could i rentthe house to others?
he said, the room is too small and can hardly accommodate all of our things. so we couldonly hang them on the walls. the landlord did not listen to him and turned around up to thefloor.
she began looking around her familiar room. four years ago, she became his bride here. on thenight of their marriage, he felt deeply guilty to her, saying, i feel so sorry to you for havingyou live in this small room. in the future i will earn a lot of money to buy our own house.
the room was only 13 square meters with two nails on the wall next to the door, one for her to hang her bag and the other for hanging umbrellas. at that time, she threw all her stuff such as her bag and umbrella on the floor once she entered the room, staring at the whole mess and feeling terribly upset.
there were three nails on the left wall, on which hung his clothes yesterday. after he lived in the room, he removed all the clothes boxes and bought her a desk in the spared room because he knew she loved writing and drawing.
there ware four nails on the right wall that were used to fix their wedding photo frame. but now there were only four nails without the frame. she still remembered he got hurt on his fingers when trying to drive the nails home. it was her who pushed him to receive an injection against tetanus in the hospital.
the landlord took a toolkit down and tried to pry the nails out when groaning at the same time. after the nails were removed, the walls were left with numerous holes. all of a sudden, she felt harshly heartbroken as if her heart was pierced through those holes and bleeding nonstop.
she sprang from the seat and exclaimed, stop prying the nails! we will continue renting thehouse and will only move away after we buy our own! he looked at her with great surprise, andthen turned round, tearing over his face.
she finally came to understand that marriage was like a wall and that all quarrels, cold wars and suspicions were like the nails on the wall. when all the nails were removed, only a wall withnumerous holes would be left. but if all the nails were still in their own places, the wall was stillintact and reliable. but in the past, what she saw was only those provoking nails.
they hung all the things back to the wall. he asked her, are you really willing to lead a toughlife with me? she patted away the ashes on hands and looked at the walls with loads of stuffon them satisfactorily, saying, yes! for me, it is not a suffering to live.

what is happiness?
i believe that most of us had been “questioned” by our parents or relatives basically about “how much do you earn a month” or “have you gotten promoted”. but few of them care about that if we are living a happy life.
concerning such phenomenon, a question comes to my mind: what is happiness?
as american president franklin roosevelt said,“ people are happy only because they think they are.”
different kinds of people enjoy different kinds of happiness. to the chairman, nation’s harmony and prosperity is happiness. to retailers, selling more goods and having more customers is happiness. to the police, getting guilt punished and society’s stability is happiness. to beggars, away from starvation is happiness.
we will feel happy when we receive greetings and wishes. a few words like “happy new year!” or “merry christmas” could be pretty delightful. but not all greetings and wishes lead to happiness. for instance, once i received a message from my girlfriend on november 11th. the message said “happy bachelors day!”
actually, no one can be happy forever.
we all confront difficulties and failures and experience reverse in our daily lives, that is inevitable . we may be upset when we lose a game. we may feel tough when we suffer from diseases.
but it doesn’t matter because happiness is much more beautiful in comparison with these tragedies. as george bernard shaw, a famous british dramatist said , “lifetime of happiness? no man alive could bear it, it would be hell on earth .” we live a hard time so that we value the happy moments. if there is no sadness, then how could we be able to measure happiness?
people never give up the pursuit of happiness. they work hard in order to own a cosy life. they take morning exercises in order to keep healthy. they go on a trip in order to release the tension of emotion…
however, the whole world’s happiness is much more essential than the one’s.
it’s everyone’s duty to make the world full of love.
actually, we are making move. i can see that more and more people start paying attention to the poor. a lot of hope projects emerged as well as charity organizations.
i have a dream that one day when an old man falls down in the middle of the street, passers-by will give a hand instead of walking away.
i believe that one day happiness will exist in every corner of the world.

One evening, the sun was just setting in with true splendor when a flock of beautiful large birds appeared out of the bushes. The duckling had never seen anything so beautiful. They were dazzlingly white with long waving necks. They were swans and uttering a peculiar cry. They spread out their magnificent broad wings and flew away from the cold regions toward warmer lands and open seas.
They mounted so high, so very high, and the ugly little duckling became strangely uneasy. He circled around and around in the water like a wheel, craning his neck out into the air after them. Then he uttered the shriek so piercing and so strange that he was quite frightened by himself. Oh, he could not forget those beautiful birds, those happy birds and as soon as they were out of sight. He ducked right down to the bottom and when he came up again, he was quite beside himself. He did not know what the birds were or where’d they flew. But all the same, he was more drawn towards them than he had ever been by any creatures before. He did not envy them in the least. How could it our to him even to wish to be such a marvelous beauty? He wouldn’t be thankful if only the ducks would have tolerated him among them, the poor ugly creature.
Early in the morning, a peasant came along and saw him, he went out onto the ice and hammered a hole in it with his heavy wooden shoe, and carried the duckling home to his wife. There, it soon revived. The children wanted to play with it. But the duckling thought they were going to ill use him and rushed in and he frightened to the milk-pan, and the milk spurted out all over the room. The woman shrieked and threw up her hands. Then it flew to the butter-cask and down into the meal-tub and out again. Oh, just imagine what it looked like by this time. The woman screamed and tried to hit it with the tongs, and the children tumbled over one another in trying to catch it, and they screamed with laughter.
By good luck, the door stood open and the duckling flew out among the bushes and the new fallen snow. And it lay there, thoroughly exhausted, but it would be too sad to mention all the privation and misery had to go through during that hard winter. When the sun began to shine warmly again, the duckling was in a marsh, lying among the rushes. The
larks were singing, and the beautiful spring had e. Then all at once, it raised its wings and they flapped with much greater strength than before and bore him off vigorously. Before he knew where he was, he found himself in a large garden with the apple trees were in full blossom. And the air was scentedly with lilacs, the long branches of which overhung the indented shores of the lake. Oh, the spring freshness was so delicious. Just in front of him, he saw three beautiful white swans advancing towards him from a thicket. With rustling feathers, they swam lightly over the water. The duckling recognized the majestic birds, and he was overe by a strange melancholy. . .
“I will fly to them, the royal birds, and they will hack me to pieces because I who am so ugly venture to approach them. But it won’t matter. Better to be killed by them than be snacked up by the ducks, pecked by the hens, or spurned by the hen wife, or suffer so much misery in the winter.” So he flew into the water and swam towards the stately swans. They saw him and darted toward him with ruffled feathers. “Kill me, oh, kill me.” said the poor creature. And bowing his head towards the water, he awaited his death. But what did he see? Reflected in the transparent water, he saw below him his own image, but he was no longer a clumsy dark gray bird, ugly and ungainly. He was himself, a swan.
Mother Duck is sitting on her eggs, The eggs break and the ducklings e one by one.
But a duckling is different from others ,It looks very hungry .Its brothers and sisters dislike it. They often laugh at him and bite him. So the ugly duckling goes away.
When the ugly duckling wakes up the next day, it finds some wild ducks are surrounding it. The wild ducks warn,“You are so ugly. Don’t e up near us”

As children, we cannot do many things, while after we grow up, we can. However, we often complain that I don’t want to grow up when we become adults actually. Firstly, growing up means more responsibilities. We should make a living by ourselves or we should support our parents when they can’t earn enough money to make a living. econdly, after graduation, we need to work instead of accomplishing nothing. We should have a target and work for it, so we have pressure on jobs. Every coin has two sides. Grow up can also broaden our horizon, offer us an opportunity to know more about our world, love and protect the important person in our life. Don’t be afraid of growing up, just be a better person and enjoy our life. 4 How times flies! Now I am a student in Grade Nine and facing the first turning point in my school life.
she was dancing. my crippled grandmother was dancing. i stood in the living room doorway absolutely stunned. i glanced at the kitchen table and sure enough-right under a small, framed drawing on the wall-was a freshly baked peach pie.
i heard her sing when i opened the door but did not want to interrupt the beautiful song by yelling i had arrived, so i just tiptoed to the living room. i looked at how her still-lean body bent beautifully, her arms greeting the sunlight that was pouring through the window. and her legs those legs that had stiffly walked, aided with a cane, insensible shoes as long as i could remember. now she was wearing beautiful dancing shoes and her legs obeyed her perfectly. no limping. no stiffness. just beautiful, fluid motion. she was the pet of the dancing world. and then she d had her accident and it was all over. i had read that in an old newspaper clipping.
she turned around in a slow pirouette and saw me standing in the doorway. her song ended, and her beautiful movements with it, so abruptly that it felt like being shaken awake from a beautiful dream. the sudden silence rang in my ears. grandma looked so much like a kid caught with her hand in a cookie jar that i couldn t help myself, and a slightly nervous laughter escaped. grandma sighed and turned towards the kitchen. i followed her, not believing my eyes. she was walking with no difficulties in her beautiful shoes. we sat down by the table and cut ourselves big pieces of her delicious peach pie.
so i blurted, how did your leg heal?
to tell you the truth my legs have been well all my life, she said.
but i don t understand! i said, your dancing career i mean you pretended all these years?
very much so, grandmother closed her eyes and savored the peach pie, and for a very good reason.
what reason?
your grandfather.
you mean he told you not to dance?
no, this was my choice. i am sure i would have lost him if i had continued dancing. i weighed fame and love against each other and love won.
she thought for a while and then continued. we were talking about engagement when your grandfather had to go to war. it was the most horrible day of my life when he left. i was so afraid of losing him, the only way i could stay sane was to dance. i put all my energy and time into practicing and i became very good. critics praised me, the public loved me, but all i could feel was the ache in my heart, not knowing whether the love of my life would ever return. then i went home and read and re-read his letters until i fell asleep. he always ended his letters with you are my joy. i love you with my life and after that he wrote his name. and then one day a letter came. there were only three sentences: i have lost my leg. i am no longer a whole man and now give you back your freedom. it is best you forget about me.
i made my decision there and then. i took my leave, and traveled away from the city. when i returned i had bought myself a cane and wrapped my leg tightly with bandages. i told everyone i had been in a car crash and that my leg would never completely heal again. my dancing days were over. no one suspected the story i had learned to limp convincingly before i returned home. and i made sure the first person to hear of my accident was a reporter i knew well. then i traveled to the hospital. they had pushed your grandfather outside in his wheelchair. there was a cane on the ground by his wheelchair. i took a deep breath, leaned on my cane and limped to him.
by now i had forgotten about the pie and listened to grandma, mesmerized. what happened then? i hurried her when she took her time eating some pie.
i told him he was not the only one who had lost a leg, even if mine was still attached to me. i showed him newspaper clippings of my accident. so if you think i m going to let you feel sorry for yourself for the rest of your life, think again. there is a whole life waiting for us out there! i don t intend to be sorry for myself. but i have enough on my plate as it is, so you d better snap out of it too. and i am not going to carry you-you are going to walk yourself. grandma giggled, a surprisingly girlish sound coming from an old lady with white hair.
i limped a few steps toward him and showed him what i d taken out of my pocket. now show me you are still a man, i said, i won t ask again. he bent to take his cane from the ground and struggled out of that wheelchair. i could see he had not done it before, because he almost fell on his face, having only one leg. but i was not going to help. and so he managed it on his own and walked to me and never sat in a wheelchair again in his life.
what did you show him? i had to know. grandma looked at me and grinned. two engagement rings, of course. i had bought them the day after he left for the war and i was not going to waste them on any other man.
i looked at the drawing on the kitchen wall, sketched by my grandfather s hand so many years before. the picture became distorted as tears filled my eyes. you are my joy. i love you with my life. i murmured quietly. the young woman in the drawing sat on her park bench and with twinkling eyes smiled broadly at me, an engagement ring carefully drawn on her finger.

he and she were sitting face to face. at this moment, the landlord came in and asked, are yousure you do not rent the house any more? he kept silent and she only shook her head. theywere going to p> 房東開始驗收房子,在房間里轉了一圈后,突然尖叫起來: 你們把我家弄成什么樣子了,墻上到處是鐵釘,還讓我怎么繼續出租啊!
then the landlord began examining the house. after looking around, the landlord screamed, damn god! see how you have ruined my house? the walls are full of nails! how could i rentthe house to others?
he said, the room is too small and can hardly accommodate all of our things. so we couldonly hang them on the walls. the landlord did not listen to him and turned around up to thefloor.
she began looking around her familiar room. four years ago, she became his bride here. on thenight of their marriage, he felt deeply guilty to her, saying, i feel so sorry to you for havingyou live in this small room. in the future i will earn a lot of money to buy our own house.
the room was only 13 square meters with two nails on the wall next to the door, one for her to hang her bag and the other for hanging umbrellas. at that time, she threw all her stuff such as her bag and umbrella on the floor once she entered the room, staring at the whole mess and feeling terribly upset.
there were three nails on the left wall, on which hung his clothes yesterday. after he lived in the room, he removed all the clothes boxes and bought her a desk in the spared room because he knew she loved writing and drawing.
there ware four nails on the right wall that were used to fix their wedding photo frame. but now there were only four nails without the frame. she still remembered he got hurt on his fingers when trying to drive the nails home. it was her who pushed him to receive an injection against tetanus in the hospital.
the landlord took a toolkit down and tried to pry the nails out when groaning at the same time. after the nails were removed, the walls were left with numerous holes. all of a sudden, she felt harshly heartbroken as if her heart was pierced through those holes and bleeding nonstop.
she sprang from the seat and exclaimed, stop prying the nails! we will continue renting thehouse and will only move away after we buy our own! he looked at her with great surprise, andthen turned round, tearing over his face.
she finally came to understand that marriage was like a wall and that all quarrels, cold wars and suspicions were like the nails on the wall. when all the nails were removed, only a wall withnumerous holes would be left. but if all the nails were still in their own places, the wall was stillintact and reliable. but in the past, what she saw was only those provoking nails.
they hung all the things back to the wall. he asked her, are you really willing to lead a toughlife with me? she patted away the ashes on hands and looked at the walls with loads of stuffon them satisfactorily, saying, yes! for me, it is not a suffering to live.

what is happiness?
i believe that most of us had been “questioned” by our parents or relatives basically about “how much do you earn a month” or “have you gotten promoted”. but few of them care about that if we are living a happy life.
concerning such phenomenon, a question comes to my mind: what is happiness?
as american president franklin roosevelt said,“ people are happy only because they think they are.”
different kinds of people enjoy different kinds of happiness. to the chairman, nation’s harmony and prosperity is happiness. to retailers, selling more goods and having more customers is happiness. to the police, getting guilt punished and society’s stability is happiness. to beggars, away from starvation is happiness.
we will feel happy when we receive greetings and wishes. a few words like “happy new year!” or “merry christmas” could be pretty delightful. but not all greetings and wishes lead to happiness. for instance, once i received a message from my girlfriend on november 11th. the message said “happy bachelors day!”
actually, no one can be happy forever.
we all confront difficulties and failures and experience reverse in our daily lives, that is inevitable . we may be upset when we lose a game. we may feel tough when we suffer from diseases.
but it doesn’t matter because happiness is much more beautiful in comparison with these tragedies. as george bernard shaw, a famous british dramatist said , “lifetime of happiness? no man alive could bear it, it would be hell on earth .” we live a hard time so that we value the happy moments. if there is no sadness, then how could we be able to measure happiness?
people never give up the pursuit of happiness. they work hard in order to own a cosy life. they take morning exercises in order to keep healthy. they go on a trip in order to release the tension of emotion…
however, the whole world’s happiness is much more essential than the one’s.
it’s everyone’s duty to make the world full of love.
actually, we are making move. i can see that more and more people start paying attention to the poor. a lot of hope projects emerged as well as charity organizations.
i have a dream that one day when an old man falls down in the middle of the street, passers-by will give a hand instead of walking away.
i believe that one day happiness will exist in every corner of the world.

Getting the casket and returning the pearl A man from the state of Chu wanted to sell a precious pearl in the state of Zheng. He made a casket for the pearl out of the wood from a magnolia tree, which he fumigated with spices. He studded the casket with pearls and jade, ornamented it with red gems and decorated it with kingfisher feathers. A man of the state of Zheng bought the casket and gave him back the pearl. Too luxuriant decoration usually supersedes what really counts. This man from Chu certainly knew how to sell a casket but he was no good at selling his pearl. And the man of Zheng didn"t know which is really valuable. 關于勵志英語經典小故事:曾子殺彘 zengzi"s wife was going to the market. Her little son insisted on going with her, making a tearful scene. “Stay at home,” she said to the boy. “When I come back, I will slaughter a pig for you.” When she came back, Zengzi got ready to slaughter the pig. His wife stopped him, saying: “I was just kidding.” “A child is not to be kidded like that!” he replied. “A child does not know much and cannot judge for himself. He learns from his parents and listens to what they day. To lie to him is to teach him to lie to others. If a mother lies to her son, he will not trust her anymore. How is she then to educate him?” With that Zengzi went to slaughter the pig and prepare a good meal for their son. Everything is Ready Except the East Wind China has been divided into three kingdoms historically: Wei in the north, Shu in the southwest and Wu in the southeast. Once Cao Cao from Wei led a 200,000 strong army down to the south to wipe out the kingdoms of Wu and Shu. Therefore, Wu and Shu united to defend his attack. Cao ordered his men to link up the boats by iron chains to form a bridge for the Cao"s passing from the north bank of Yangtze River to the south bank. The General Commander of the allied army was Zhou Yu. He analyzed the situation carefully. Then he got a good idea. He decided to attack the enemy with fire. So he began to prepare for the coming battle. Suddenly he thought of the direction of wind. He needed the east wind to blow strongly in order to accomplish his scheme. However, the wind did not come for days. Thus Zhou Yu was worried about it. At that time, he got a note from Zhuge Liang, the military adviser of the State of Shu, which reads: "To fight Cao Cao Fire will help you win Everything is ready Except the east wind" Quickly he turned to Zhuge Liang for help. Zhuge told him not to worry and there would be an east wind in a couple of days. Two days later, the east wind helped Zhou accomplish his scheme. At last, the allied army won the war. Later, people use it to say "All is ready except what is crucial".

Wolf, having a bone stuck in his throat, hired a Crane, for a large sum, to put her head into his throat, and draw out the bone. When the Crane had extracted the bone, and demanded the promised payment, the Wolf, grinning and grinding his teeth, exclaimed: "Why, you have surely already a sufficient recompense, in having been permitted to draw out your head in safety from the mouth and jaws of a wolf."

A Story of a hat Called "Gaht"
This story comes from the Chosun period in Korea.
People of the noble class were called "yangban" at the time.
They had to wear a hat named a "gaht" after married.
Whenever they went outside, they were required to wear a "gaht".
One day,a yangban who was wearing a nice gaht went on a journey.
He went to "Geojedo," one of the beautiful islands in Korea.
The yangban was looking around the island.
All of a sudden,a big gust of wind blew his gaht away.
"Oh,no! I"m in big trouble now!" he said.
Indeed,a married yangban couldn"t go around without wearing a gaht.
It was like wearing only your underwear when going outside.
He thought and thought. Finally he said,
"Ah,I have an idea! I"ll go talk to the person who manages the village."
He found the lord of the village and said,
"Sir,while I was passing through your village, the wind blew away my gaht.
Since it was blown off in this village,it still must bu here.
I believe you are responsible for finding it,right?"
The lord thought for a moment;
"What he said is not wrong, but I know I won"t be able to find it.
I don"t want to buy him one. A new gaht is too expensive.
Hmm...I know!" The lord said.
"Please wait have a while,Sir."
The lord called his servant,
"Come quickly, and do what I tell you.
Go to the seashore and call in the fishermen."
Meanwhile, the yangban was not sure what the lord was up to.
"I lost my gaht in the village.
Why is he calling for the fishermen?" he wondered.
The fishermen arrived quickly. The lord said,
"Well...our guest here says that the wind blew his gaht away.
Therefore, you, fishermen, must buy a new gaht for him."
The first fishermen replied,
"What! Why do we have to buy him a gaht?"
The lord answerd,"There says ago,didn"t you,fishermen,
have an offering to the sky, asking for no wind to blow on the sea?"
The second fishermen said,"Yes. We did...!"
The lord replied,"Since you asked the sky not to blow wind on the sea,
all of the wind has blow on the land.
It"s your fault this guest"s gaht blew awaya1"
The fishermen were confused.
They knew his decision was unfair, but they couldn"t come up with a better answer.
Reluctantly, the fishermen bought a new gaht for the yangban.
The yangban thanked the fishermen and the lord for his new gaht and thought,
"That load sure is a quick thinker! Ha! Ha!"
He put on the new gaht and continued the tour of Geojedo.
