「多年以前，美國哈佛大學的校長為一次錯誤判斷，失去了一次難得的發展機遇，但卻造就了斯坦福大學。
那天，一對老夫婦沒有事先預約，就直接去拜訪哈佛大學的校長。女的穿著一套退色的條紋棉布衣服，而她的丈夫則穿著布制的便宜西裝。
校長的秘書在頃刻間就斷定這兩個鄉下老土根本不可能與哈佛有業務往來。
老先生輕聲地：“我們要見校長。”
秘書很禮貌地回答：“他整天都很忙。”
女士回答，說：“沒關系，我們可以等。”
過了幾個小時，秘書一直忙自己的事，把他們冷落在一邊，希望他們知難而退，知趣地離開。他們卻固執地等在那里。
秘書終于決定通知校長：“也許他們跟您講幾句話就會走開。”校長不耐煩地同意了,他接待了這對夫婦。
